Rachel Glik

One of Cardthartic’s very first Contributing Cardies, Rachel was selling her own line of beautiful hand-made cards when she and Jodee met at the Chicago Gift Show back in 2004. Her lovely, original sentiments were printed on paper that she had created, with dried flowers pressed right in.

But, for Rachel, making cards was more a labor of love and means of expression than a profession … Dr. Glik holds a doctorate in counseling and masters in organizational psychology. In her private practice in St. Louis, she’s counseled individuals, couples, and families for the past 25 years and makes frequent appearances as a family counselor on local Fox 2 News. “I help get to the heart of what we deal with every day … our relationship with ourselves and with each other.”

A lifelong learner, Dr. Glik has, “A post-doc, if you will, in the power of the mind-body connection, mindfulness, energy, quantum physics. And writing poetry. All have strengthened my aliveness and happiness from within and my ability to help others do the same.”

The Inheritance

Gramma looks at me
from the yellowed photograph.
The breath behind her faded smile
rises, lands on my paper
takes me back to her dying day
the white steel bed
her words weak as wind
through a broken straw.

Her whole life, she tried to speak.
I remember her circular stories
how Grandpa stopped her
Pushed her to the back of the store

but her truth found revenge
on paper, boxes of paper
brimming the closet
we cleared when she died.
She scribed the ink of her soul
from the fire of living
front and back, on envelopes,
note pads, old cards, torn
napkins.

I study her frozen face on the photo
and wish I could find the day
she handed me her pen.
